MIKE THURMOND UNVEILS HISTORIC 50% SALES TAX CUT
Following his statewide tour listening to the concerns of working families, Democratic gubernatorial candidate Mike Thurmond is announcing a major new economic policy proposal to cut the Georgia state sales tax in half.
Thurmond’s new policy, which is the cornerstone of his Affordability Agenda, will slash the state sales tax by two cents — effectively a 50 percent reduction from the 4 percent rate. This historic tax cut proposal is designed to lower the cost of living for Georgia families by combating inflation and providing immediate, comprehensive financial relief for every consumer.
“Working families across Georgia are feeling the pinch at the grocery store, the pharmacy, the gas station and everywhere in between,” said Mike Thurmond. “With this proposed 50 percent cut to the state sales tax, we will finally provide them with the financial breathing room they deserve. This is not just about changing policy; it is about providing dignity and economic security for our neighbors by cutting the tax burdens that impact their everyday lives.”
Under this bold new economic plan, the massive reduction in the sales tax will directly benefit all Georgians. Sales tax is the most regressive type of tax, which disproportionately impacts middle-class and low-income families. By reducing this burden on hardworking families, those who need relief most will keep more money in their pockets to pay for rent, childcare, and basic necessities.
“For too many of our families, the economic pressures of the world today can feel insurmountable,” Thurmond noted on the campaign trail. “The most dangerous feeling a working parent can have is the belief that their state government is ignoring their financial struggles. This new proposed policy plan changes that. By helping Georgia consumers keep more of their hard-earned dollars we are making sure that when families go to the checkout counter, they have a path to hope and financial stability.”
This isn’t the first time Thurmond has proposed a radical change to tax policy that benefits Georgians. As the DeKalb County CEO, he spearheaded an effort to save homeowners over $1 billion in property taxes. For more information about that proposal, see:
